Undredal Stave Church, Aurland

© Leiv Bergum
Undredal stave church is the smallest church in Scandinavia still in use, with only 40 seats. The church was built in 1147 as a stave church and was then called St. Nicholas Chapel.

Undredal church received its present appearance from a substantial restoration which was carried out in 1722.

In 1962 the church was internally restored and they recovered the ancient decorations we can see today. These paintings was the mark of the prominent Sop family which was based in Undredal during the middle age. The chandelier, and the church bell, are medieval, while the rest of the church contents date from various periods like the two brass candlesticks are from the year 1702 and the pulpit is from 1696.

The church does not have its own graveyard, and so the inhabitants of Undredal have to use the graveyard at Vangen church, in the principal parish.
