Getting to the Sognefjord
The innermost half of the Sognefjord lies in the centre of Southern Norway on the border between the Eastern and Western parts of the country. In previous times, travelling on the fjord itself was virtually the only way of getting to the area, but modern roads have gradually made it easy to get here from all parts of the country. Nowadays, if you choose one of the shortest routes to the fjord, it is only a 2 to 3-hour drive from Bergen, 4 to 5 hours from Oslo and 5 to 6 hours from Trondheim.

Modern express boats depart Bergen city centre for Sogndal daily throughout the year. On the trip up the fjord the boats call at several villages including Vik, Balestrand and Leikanger. From 1 May to 30 September express boats also run daily from Bergen all the way to Flåm. These boats connect with ferries to Gudvangen, Kaupanger and Lærdal and transfer passengers out in the middle of the fjord.

Widerøe has several daily direct flights from Oslo and Bergen to Sogndal Airport all year. Flights take about 30 min. from Bergen and 45 min. from Oslo. There are also several other services to and from Sogndal.
