Scenic Mountain Passes
The Sognefjord is surrounded by spectacular steep mountains. You can drive through the mountain areas on scenic mountain routes and go hiking, climbing, summer skiing and fishing, or just sit back and relax while enjoying the fresh air and the stunning scenery.

The Mountain Passes

Route 55 across the Sognefjell mountain area between Luster and Lom is the highest and most impressive mountain pass in Northern Europe (highest point 1430 meters), and it has been awarded the status of National Tourist Route because of the spectacular and wild mountain scenery it passes through in the Jotunheimen National Park.

Aurlandsfjorden
The mountain road between Aurland and Lærdal (route 243) is called the “Snow Road” because snow normally lies beside the road throughout the summer. This route is 48 km long, and its highest point is 1306 metres. The views of the Aurlandsfjord are breathtaking.

In summer, this narrow road from Øvre Årdal to Turtagrø links Årdal to Luster and Norway’s first National Tourist Route - Sognefjellsvegen. Along this route you will enjoy stunning views of the Jotunheimen mountains. The route is a toll road, and is not suitable for buses. Web: www.tindevegen.no

The RV 50 road between Aurland and Hol, which passes through the popular hiking area of the Aurlandsdalen valley, is an ideal starting point for spectacular hikes in both the valley and the surrounding mountains.

The Gaularfjellet mountains lie to the north of Balestrand, and the road between Dragsvik and Moskog (near Førde) passes through them. On the Balestrand side, the road twists and turns through nine hairpin bends. There are many beautiful rivers and waterfalls along the route.

The road through the mountain area between Vik and Vinje/Voss (route 13) provides an ideal base for hikes in both the Vikafjellet and the Stølsheimen mountains, where there are many old summer pasture farms set in hilly terrain.
